Traditional Chinese food in London

Our Story

Heritage of Joy king Lau 1977

Even before opening Joy King Lau in 1977, Norman Han was already shaping what would become a true Chinatown dining legacy. He was one of the founding fathers of the Chinatown Chinese Association that we have today.

The restaurant quickly became one of Chinatown’s main attractions. Today, it remains the longest-lasting establishment, proudly serving both local residents and tourists. The outstanding value Dim Sum menu continues to be enjoyed, and the extended main menu provides a journey of discovery.

Over the last 45 years, Joy King Lau has built up a loyal following, having served three generations of customers! “We actually have seen our customer’s children’s children coming in, which is a wonderful reflection on the time we have been here” says Norman Han. “Sadly our manager for the last six years, King, has now retired due to poor health and we all wish her a long and happy retirement.

Our brilliant new manager, Vince Gu has retained the majority of our staff to give a great experience.” Traditional favourites along with some interesting innovations, Joy King Lau heads for its fifth decade!

The First to Introduce Dim Sum to London’s Chinatown Dining Legacy

Since we are the first to introduce dim sum to London, it has been our mission to share the rich traditions of Chinese cuisine with this city’s vibrant and diverse community. Over the years, we’ve continuously evolved—refining our recipes, enhancing our service, and embracing modern techniques while honoring our heritage.

As London has grown more diverse, so too has our understanding of the flavors and experiences that bring people together. We are proud to remain a cornerstone of Chinatown, serving generations of families and newcomers alike. Thank you for being part of our journey as we continue to celebrate and improve this culinary tradition we hold so dear.
